Kilim rug, antique oriental rug – this construction technique produces a flat-weave rug that is thick, strong and exceptionally durable. Designs are almost always bold and colorful and employ many of the design patterns of the knotted Caucasian rugs.
Wool Area Flat Weave Kilim Rugs
Wool is the basic of handwoven kilim and it possesses a great history. Turfan wool has the reputation of being the finest in Asia and is costlier even than silk. The unique sheen of the knotted Khotan carpets is due to its quality. Carpet and rugs woven for the floor, bed, and bench, there are namazlyk in Central Asia. This rug designed with a central mihrab, the traditional arch, and unrolled at the time of prayer.
Also, there are special funerary rugs, ayatlyk. Each makes a clean surface on the desert sand. Similarly, woven squares about a meter square, known as soufreh, are so popular on the ground of nomads and villages as a surface for the preparation and eating the food. Though in areas where cotton is available these may resemble no more than cotton table-cloth. In wool-weaving areas, they are still designed with a central pattern bordered on four sides and woven in intricate flat-weave techniques.
